The head of the General Department of the United States in the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Josefina Vidal, published on her Twitter account that the number of U.S. citizens who have visited the island has increased.

Vidal pointed out that 619,523 U.S. citizens visited Cuba in 2017, which represent a rise of 217.4 percent, as well as 453,905 Cubans who live in that northern country, which accounts for a 137.8-percent increase.

In general, Vidal noted that a total of 173,128 people from the United States visited the Cuban archipelago, representing an increase of 191 percent, compared to 2016.

The official stated that despite the damage caused by Hurricane Irma, the foreign tourist arrivals in Cuba increased, totaling 4,257,754 international visitors until last November.

She noted that the increase represents an overfulfillment of the plan by 15 percent, and a 19.7-percent rise in contrast to the same period in 2016.

Canada continued to be Cuba's major tourist-sending market, followed by the United States and Cubans who reside in that country, totaling 1,025,521 travelers and a 23-percent increase in arrivals in the Caribbean island.

Meanwhile, the fastest-growing traditional markets were France, Italy, Russia, Spain, Argentina and Brazil (all surpassed their records). In the case of Russia, that country broke its own record of visitors in August 2016, reporting 100,000 holidaymakers and a 68-percent increase.

At the same time, cruise tourism grew 30 percent, to 397,520 travelers. At present, ten cruise companies operate in Cuba and that number is expected to increase at a good pace.
