Maritime and civil aviation authorities emphasized that tourist travels to Cuba are carried out in an environment of total security, which has favorably influenced the tourist increase registered in the country in recent years.

Alfredo Cordero, president of the Cuban Institute of Civil Aeronautics, recently said that the nation guarantees operations in its airports with the highest standards of safety and quality, recognized by international civil aviation organizations.

The executive assured that safety is given because experts constantly assess risks and dangers that could arise on flights and facilities, while Cuba complies with all the rules and recommendations of Annex 17 of the Chicago Convention.

The qualification and expertise exhibited by the staff of the international airports, responsible for offering the first impressions to those who are attracted by the goodness of Cuba destination also contribute to this aspect.

So far, eight US airlines undergo regular flights to Havana and some visit other Cuban international airports, which is a positive step, as both countries lacked this link for more than 50 years.

In 2016, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed for the establishment of regular flights between both nations.

However, US citizens are prohibited from traveling to Cuba as tourists because Washington's economic blockade of the Caribbean island deprives them of that right, and obliges them to opt for one of the 12 general categories approved by the US Government.

A substantial increase in the arrival of ships and passengers in the mode of cruises is foreseen in the maritime sector for this year.

Ángel Díaz Albertini, director of Aries Transportes SA company, in charge of cruise operations in Cuba, recently endorsed the high level that has reached the personnel in this type of operations, which results in the safety verified by the travelers.

He commented that work is being done on consolidating the port infrastructure, which includes modernization in several terminals as part of the development program to increase the quality of services.

He also signified the importance of increased cruise operations of US companies, agreed as part of the process toward normalization of links between Havana and Washington.

In 2016, Carnival Cruise, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruises and Pearl Seas were presented and approved to travel to Cuba in this modality.

Currently the port of Havana, main stopover of the cruisers in the country, has the capacity to receive two ships at the same time, but in the plans of development of the city it is foreseen its expansion, with a cost over 100 million dollars.

José Manuel Bisbé, president of Viajes Cuba business group, told the press Cuba has become a destination of infinite possibilities for cruise activity, thanks to the number of cities, ports, culture and the high level of security it offers to travelers from all over the world.

If the blockade prohibitions are eliminated, Cuba could receive more than one million cruise passengers per year and be part of a circuit that moves millions of dollars in the Caribbean, one of the most active areas in this form of entertainment in the tourist industry.
