Good morning, young man. Good morning, can you tell me why I see so many people here? A lady with a nice smile asked me, while my eyes tried to find the answer by their own. I was about to reply, when the voice of another lady whom I had not seen, but was very close to me and aware of our converstation, went ahead of myself.
With a pride that can only be compared to that of a mother whom is asked about the achievements of her most beloved son, she replied: -We are celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Radio Taino's Sunday Oasis program. If you wish, you may come in; all that people you see listen to this program; but rather than being an audience, we are a big family.
It was then I understood that all those persons gathered at the UNEAC's Hurón Azul room, were not only waiting to celebrate the anniversary of a radio show, but the meeting with a staff that, from the radio, had influenced so positively upon their lives.
Radio Taíno suggests every Sunday, from 8-10 am, a space for the most intimate dialogue with the audience; a time for analysis and reflection, where specialists of the most diverse fields offer tools that help the listener build a better way of undestanding life, and flow positively on them. For two decades, Sunday Oasis, conceived and directed by journalist and writer Bienvenido Rojas, has kept the premise of seeing that day of the week as a gift for the audience.
“Oasis emerged by the need of content, as an alternative to Early magazine, broadcast Monday through Monday. I have always thought that Sunday is not a day for hearing the same news we have heard throughout the week, -Rojas commented-, so we began to search for contents that refresh the listener's ears, but, at the same time, were useful. We looked for other contents, but also another language, another way of saying... thus we started.”
“One of the first sections we had was Learning to live, hosted by Ph.D. in Psychology, Guillermo Julio Ruiz Rodríguez; to which joined others like Between Science and Fiction, Techniques of the Feng Shui, and Numerology -this latter with a very good audience. Little by little we've noticed how the energy among listeners and the show program began to move in both directions. When you set your mind to work, life may change completely, and that was what we aimed at from the very start.”
What's your view on the program? What do you think it has given to the audience and what's left to be done?
“I think we've done a lot, but there's still a lot we must do; for example, dealing with issues related to nutrition -although we have been teaching about spiritual nutrition, we must go deep on how to feed us appropriately, to feel better. Also, the return of sections preferred by the audience, such as Songorocosongo which reflected, from a social side, the racial problem in Cuba.”
“Another aspect we should take into account has to do with joining more listeners belonging to other age groups. Originally, our destination audience were not the young, since we felt there was a more needed sector. There is a lot of radio for all ages, but very little addressed to the third age, related to essential topics at that stage of life, like the sexual issue. However, we are working today on a project that pretends to link our contents with the social networks, and we are thinking on preparing a segment related to youth. Our main goal consists in instilling values in them, from the incorporation of good ways of living that make them grow in the more humane sense of the word.”
How do you choose the voice that will identify the show?
The announcing issue for a program like this one is truly complicated. Excellent professionals have worked in this show; nowadays we are lucky to have Jorge Luis Sopoque: a linguist, actor and director… in short, a very able man. Having a host like him here is an example of maturity reached by the program.”
This versatile announcer, who has also hosted other popular programs on Radio Taino, as Fame FM and Successes and Legends, is the person we have chosen to talk to.
How did you arrive to Sunday Oasis?
“Oasis arrived to me…, I had heard about this program very long before, but one day, I was asked to do it and I accepted. I identify with this type of program where I am not a mere music broadcaster, but a contributor of a social good, since this has to do with my formation and vocation, for I am very linked to all these phylosophic subjects, the so-called neurosciences which, for me, is rather science than speudo.
This is a program that forces me to do what, in my view, I consider the key of a good communicator in the broad sense of the word: you must be a better person to project that. Sunday Oasis obliges me to work harder and harder to convey a message; if I did not get to learn and implement all that knowledge I've acquired throughout life, I would not be able to transmit all I've learnt.”
Do you think this kind of show program is needed?
“Very much, undoubtedly…; however, I have to confess I was one of those who thought programs like this one were not what the young audience looked for, since we tend to trivialize at times the image of the youth in our country. Nonetheless, and for my joy, I've been surprised to listen to many young ones speaking about issues dealt in the program in public spaces, so I've noticed that the youth is not unaware of these topics; just the opposite, they are very interested in them.
In addition, I think that the hours in which the program is broadcast does not favor the young to listen to it, so, perhaps, we should re-design the schedule, do a good promotion in platforms closer to them.”
It's been almost two years you are hosting a program with two decades of existence, how long you'll be doing this?
“I could do it as long as I am allowed to, because this is a program I do it not by force, or because I have to do it, but I enjoy it a lot. Each program I do is different, my life begins to change...., sunday is for me a bright day, after I finish each program, I am a new man, full of positive energy.”
Exclusively for this portal, many listeners commented about the meaning of Oasis for their lives: This program changed my way of seeing the world, I appreciate the peace I have in my house; it taught me to value me as a person; it has been a big lesson for life; my family thanks how much this program changed my life; I cannot live on Sundays without this program... are some of the so many grateful and fondness expressions toward the program.
The staff of Sunday Oasis regurlarly exchange live with the audience, as a path to make a better program and keep on pleasing and helping that listener who stops being a passive listener to become the absolute protagonist of the debate.
Without boasting of being a unique or different program, the issues tackled on this radio show, related to the spiritual growth from looks labelled as of pseudoscience, from a scientific and experiential approach, distinguish its offer. As its slogan says, it is a program that suggests a dialogue with the most important person, whom we often talk to less; that is, yourself. Sunday Oasis is, without a doubt, a gift appreciated by the audience.
