The Cuban Volleyball Federation reports that during the national team's recent trip to Tampere, Finland, six members competing in group two of the World League, have been accused of committing a crime.
Reports sent by the delegation and permanent contact maintained with the Cuban embassy allow us to report that players Osmany Santiago Uriarte Mestre, Abrahan Alfonso Gavilán, Ricardo Norberto Calvo Manzano, Rolando Cepeda Abreu, Luis Tomás Sosa Sierra and Dariel Albo Miranda have been detained, while an investigation is carried out by Finnish authorities.
Although an investigation is currently underway, which will provide us with all the details and allow us to learn the degree of each member’s involvement, preliminary information suggests that they are linked to acts completely unrelated to the discipline, sense of integrity and respect which govern our sport, and the society which we have been defending since 1959.
The head of the delegation and representatives of the Cuban Embassy are providing follow-up to the entire process, including legal paperwork, and procedures related to possible sentences which might result from the process.
Here in Cuba we will take appropriate measures as demanded by behavior which does not reflect the ethics and principles with which we have been educated.
