Roberto Fonseca: Everyone Wants to Perform in Santiago de Cuba

Renowned pianist Roberto Fonseca said on Wednesday in Santiago de Cuba prior to the inauguration of the 33 rd Edition of the Jazz Plaza International Festival that everyone wants to perform in the eastern city and exchange with the audience.

Renowned pianist Roberto Fonseca said on Wednesday in Santiago de Cuba prior to the inauguration of the 33 rd Edition of the Jazz Plaza International Festival that everyone wants to perform in the eastern city and exchange with the audience.

During a press conference, the young artist expressed his satisfaction for the event in Santiago de Cuba, which alongside with Havana for the second time is hosting one of the most important Jazz gatherings in Latin America and recognized worldwide.

Fonseca highlighted the musical roots of the eastern city and stressed that there are still lots of talent to be recognized in the region.

He praised the presence of the Diva of the Buena Vista Social Club in Santiago de Cuba, Omara Portuondo who offered a concert on Wednesday at the Marti Theater.

Omara is Cuba and to have her open the Jazz Plaza event in the city is a blessing, said the musician who will perform on Thursday at the Marti Theater with the showman in Cuba, Maestro Bobby Carcasses and the multi-instrumentalist US composer Ted Nash.

The Marti Theater, Iris Jazz Club and branch of the Writers and Artists Association in Santiago will be the main venues of the Jazz Plaza event in the eastern city with the participation of renowned representatives of the genre on the island among them the saxophone quartet, from the city of Pinar del Rio and the Mestizaje group from Matanzas.

Singers, musicians and groups will be in the city like Zulema Iglesias, Giselle Lage, Carlos Miyares, Ivan Costa and De Cuba Somos, Jazz D Bess, the Vocal quintet and Okan Jazz while the foreign representatives will include Chilean Ivan Latapiat and The Shuffle Demons band from Canada.

The most awaited concert, presided by the Oriente Symphony Orchestra, will include the talented Director Cosette Justo Valdez in the Dolores Hall on Saturday in honor of the beginning of the Jazz Symphony, tribute to the great composer, pianist and director of the US Leonard Bernstein orchestra, on occasion of the centennial of his birth.

Since 1980 at the initiative of Bobby Carcasses, the Jazz Plaza International Festival, major jazz event in Cuba, which has included the Caribbean island among the leading nations in the development of the genre, and with the existing musical richness in the country, has acquired a distinctive sound.

Interpreted first by the African American community, descendants of slaves at the end of the 19th century and consolidated in the 20 th, Jazz is identified by the opportunity to improvise by the artist, mainly with the use of a piano, bass, drums and wind instruments.
