Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Councils of State and Ministers, congratulated the workers of Radio Rebelde National Radio Station, on its 60th anniversary, in a letter read by Alfonso Noya Martínez, president of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT) during the 60th Anniversary Gala, held February 24 in the Sala Avellaneda of the National Theater of Cuba, Havana.
“Sixty years ago today, in the heart of the Sierra Maestra, Radio Rebelde broadcast for the first time. Since then the legacies of Fidel and Che have guided its workers in every decisive hour of the Homeland.
“I know that this anniversary reaffirms your commitment and motivation to continue defending the Revolution, within and beyond our borders, with professionalism, talent and the infallible weapon of truth.
“Like every compatriot, I am sure that the historic ‘Here is Radio Rebelde!’ will continue accompanying the Cuban people in all their battles,” Raúl wrote.
During the cultural and political gala, presided by Alfonso Noya Martínez and Yoel Pérez, head of the Ideological Department of the Party Central Committee, along with other officials and leaders, Milagro de la Caridad Pérez Caballero, member of the Cuban Workers’ Federation National Secretariat, accompanied by Nereyda López, Secretary General of the National Cultural Workers Union, at the proposal of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba, presented the Lazaro Peña Order in the Third Degree to the Radio Rebelde collective, which was received – on behalf of all workers – by Director Mabel Manso Delgado.
The Gala saw performances from, among others, the Habana Compás Dance Company, Camerata del Son, Jóvenes Clásicos del Son and Anacaona Orchestra.
The dedication of the workers of Radio Rebelde, their excellent results and their role in the defense of the Socialist Homeland were also highlighted, which has led them to maintain for several years the status of National Vanguard Collective.
Tribute was also paid to the station’s founders, especially Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara, who on February 24, 1958, in Altos de Conrado, in the Sierra Maestra, established this important station, which over the years has become the “voice of the people and for the people... the Voice of the Revolution.”
