Positive ties between Cuba and Unesco highlighted in Havana

The President of the Cuban National Commission for Unesco, Oscar Leon, highlighted on Tuesday in Havana the positive ties between the Caribbean island and the international body whose results stand out in the region.

In statements to ACN, on the 70th anniversary of Cuba’s entrance to Unesco, Leon referred to the history of the relationship and pointed out that after the triumph of the Revolution the ties were reinforced as both sides coincided with the principles and objectives,  for example the eradication of illiteracy.

Referring to the important moments during the 7 decades of joint work, he mentioned the visit of the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro to the UNESCO headquarters based in France in addition to the celebration of World Jazz Day in Havana where Irina Bokova, General Director of the organization attended.

He emphasized that Unesco declared that Cuba was the only Latin American and Caribbean country to comply with the Millennium Development Objectives in the educational sector.  Leon also stressed that Unesco’s priority is to improve and increase the quality of education.

He commented that Cuba has 76 schools associated to Unesco and the network will celebrate its 35th anniversary next year.  Cooperation he said favors a better understanding between entities and institutions for a more comprehensive educational system of the new generations and development of the country.

Leon explained that different projects are tied to the heritage sites, sanitation of the beaches, and protection of the environment and the correct use of the information and communications technologies.

The directive also referred to the Cuban sites inscribed in the Unesco World Heritage List, Biosphere Reserves located in the country in addition to the ties with the Association of Writers and Artists of Cuba, Sports Institute, Physical Education and Recreation and other Ministries.

Founded on November 17th, 1947, the Cuban National Commission for Unesco is ascribed to the Foreign Ministry and has among its functions to advise the Cuban government on issues referring to the world body.
