The establishment of regional cooperation mechanisms is one of the elements envisioned in the pact for the defense of the Amazon, signed this week in Colombia at a time when wildfires are still raging in the so-called lungs of the planet.
In a context also marked by criticism of the Brazilian government for its delinquent reaction to fires, several of the Latin American countries that share that territory signed the aforementioned document during a presidential summit that took place in the Colombian city of Leticia. It includes the establishment of mechanisms for the exchange of information to combat illegal activities that threaten the conservation of the Amazon.

It also establishes the strengthening of coordinated action for the assessment of forests and biodiversity, as well as to combat deforestation and forest degradation, based on national policies and their respective regulatory frameworks.

Implementing initiatives for restoration, rehabilitation and accelerated reforestation in areas degraded by forest fires and illegal activities, including illegal mineral extraction, is also part of the agreement.

The commitment includes strengthening the capacities and participation of indigenous and tribal peoples and local communities in the sustainable development of the Amazon, recognizing their fundamental role in the conservation of the region.

It also aims to work together to strengthen financial programs and mechanisms, to claim the commitments of the countries assumed in these spaces, to mobilize public and private resources, including multilateral banking, as appropriate, for the implementation of this pact.

The document was signed by the president of Colombia, Iván Duque; from Peru, Martín Vizcarra; from Ecuador, Lenín Moreno; from Bolivia, Evo Morales; the vice president of Suriname, Michael Adhin; the chancellor of Brazil, Ernesto Araújo; and Guyana's Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman.
