The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has alerted in a report that the progress towards the elimination of vertical transmission of AIDS and syphilis in Latin America and the Caribbean got decelerated.

With the title 'Elimination of the Mother-Child transmission of AIDS and Syphilis in the Americas: 2016 Update' the report points out that last year, a total of 2,100 children got infected with AIDS, most of them from mother to child, representing 55 percent less than in 2010.

However, the reduction pace slowed down in the last years.

In 2010 and 2011, new cases reached 800, they only got reduced in 100 in 2014 and 2015.

PAHO expert Marcos Espinal warned that despite the efforts to prevent transmission, many challenges still persist.

PAHO reports that in 2015, 72 percent of pregnant women in Latin America and the Caribbean were submitted to AIDS tests. Eighty-eight percent of the positive cases received treatment.

Combined with other medical interventions the rate was reduced, from 15 percent, to 8, though the final line is to reach just 2 percent.

On congenital syphilis, the number of children born with it in the region (170 for every 100,000 life births) triples the goal for elimination (50 for every 100 thousand), the report says.

To reduce this, the countries need that at least, 95 percent of the pregnant women receive prenatal attention, 95 or more submit to tests, and at least 95 of the diagnosed ones, receive suitable treatment, PAHO states.

Cuba is proud to have been the first country in the world to have eliminated the mother to child transmission of AIDS and the congenital syphilis, PAHO emphasizes.

Cuba exhibits an AIDS mother-to-child transmission rate of 1.85 percent, under the regional average and the average agreed by the countries.
