The project of nutritional forests for the production of improved pastures acquired from Cuba is being successfully developed in Veracruz, Jesus Ortega, president of the Livestock Association of this Mexican state, said.

About 50 farmers in this region are implementing the program to create high-protein food and increase pasture reserves during the dry season. This year, most of the Veracruz stockbreeders are affected by an irregular drought.

The initiative consists of planting plots with different kinds of grass with a high content of proteins and a high yield that are subsequently processed and offered as forage to animals in grazing lands, Ortega said.

The Cuban program allows stockbreeders to have 60 percent of food reserves with a minimum of resources, he stated.

The project, according to the livestock leader, will continue to expand in the state due to its benefits, including its contribution to livestock reproduction.
