The mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena, has welcomed here today legendary Cuban ballerina, Alicia Alonso, who expressed gratitude for her great contribution to the world dance and culture.

It is an honor to be capable of touching her hands, Carmena said excitedly after greeting the illustrious visitor at the headquarters of the City Hall in Madrid, located in front of the emblematic Cibeles fountain.

The mayor of Madrid confessed to feel happy to welcome in the consistory the prima ballerina assoluta, considered one of the most influential artists of the second half of the 20th century around the world.

'I am delighted to be with you,' the mayor said to the director of the Cuban National Ballet (BNC) and her husband, dance critic Pedro Simon, who highlighted the successes of the recently concluded tour of the prestigious company for Spain, Italy and France.

During the affectionate meeting, Carmena stressed Alonso that she and her country, Cuba, had in Madrid a friendly city hall.

Councilor and Third Deputy Mayor, Mauricio Valiente, and diplomats of the embassy of the Caribbean island in Spain, also attended the meeting.

Alicia Alonso was honored as Illustrious Visitor of that city in the region of Castile and Leon on Tuesday, July 18, by Segovia mayor, Clara Luquero, due to her influence and her fight so that culture reaches all social classes.

Alonso, 96, will be appointed tomorrow in Segovia as World Dance Ambassador by UNESCO, an organization from which she was named as Goodwill Ambassador many years ago.
