The University of Havana granted Thursday Vietnamese Communist Party''s Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong the Doctor Honoris Causa title in Political Sciences, in the frame of the Vietnamese leader''s official visit to Cuba.

Havana University's Rector Gustavo Cobreiro, on behalf of the teachers, workers and students of the Cuban institution, recognized Phu Trong's prolific scientific career and his merits for his contribution to the construction of socialism in Vietnam, so as his interest in sharing the Vietnamese technical-practical experiences on its development model.

Cobreiro talked about the vaste history of Nguyen Phu Trong and his responsibilities inside the Vietnamese Communist Party in areas such as science, culture and education.

The Cuban academician highlighted the Vietnamese communist leader's admiration for the Cuban Revolution and its historic leader Fidel Castro, and the PCV Secretary General thanked him for this title, highlighting the historic ties of friendship between Cuba and his country, emphasizing in a keynote conference at the Aula Magna of the University of Havana the progress made in the social and economic spheres in his country, based on the development programs with a socialist orientation.

Chaired by the member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and first Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel, he spoke with young students on topics related to the history of that country and current political events.

Nguyen Phu Trong was elected as general secretary of the PCV in his 11th Congress and reelected in that post in 2016.

Cuba and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1960, both of which are qualified as excellent links and framed in the common objective of promoting socialism and sustainable development.
