Havana Club rum, one of the best ones despite the US blockade

Being sold in over 125 markets, the Cuban rum belonging to Havana Club International S.A. (HCI) company, is 21 of the world ranking, despite not being marketed in US, main purchaser of this kind of liquors worldwide.

Although the product cannot be exported to this nation, representing 40% of the total of imports in the world, the aforementioned joint company is selling at present 50 million bottles, being Cuba its main recipient, mostly followed by Germany, France, Spain, Chile, Canada and Mexico.

According to Jerome Cottin-Bizonne, CEO of HCI, the company forsees to carry out investments in San José de las Lajas, today Mayabeque province, to expand this modern industry with the objective of facing world growth and possible opening of the US market.

The French CEO commented that these actions aim at satisfying the marketing of the high-range rum in US, once the authorities of this nation allow its sale, limited at present by the bans imposed by the economic, commercial and financial US blockade against Cuba.

Last January it was known that the US Department of Treasure granted the renewal of the Havana Club trademark registration to Cubaexport, and that the US Patent and Trademark Office accepted the Cuban company as legitimate owner of this rum.

This permit put an end to a two-decade litigation on who has the right to use Havana Club trademark in US, also disputed by the Bacardi company.

However, in spite of the new scenario of relationships between Washington and Havana, the blockade still prohibits the financial transactions with Cuba, sauf certain licences granted by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (in English, OFAC) and the Department of Treasure.

Out of the four million of sold boxes by HCI in 2015, little more than a million was distributed in Cuba, which meant a growth of 17t% as compared to the previous years, encouraged by the rise of tourists to the country.

Created in 1993 as a result of the union between the Cuba Rum Corps. And Pernod Ricard, this company strengthens its iconic collection composed of Havana Club Selección de Maestros, Añejo 15 años, Unión and Máximo, all of them very prestigious only addressed to a luxurious market.
