Cubans of different generations recall today in the bicentenary of his birth Pedro "Perucho" Figueredo, La Bayamesa´’s author, a patriotic anthem turned into the national anthem.

Mass media show on their covers life passages of the patriot who entered to immortality on account of his composition that calls to the independence war, and reporters highlight his qualities which led him to the rank of general mayor of the Liberation Army against the Spanish colonial oppressor.

The journal "Juventud Rebelde" quotes Bayamo's city historian, Ludin Fonseca, who warns that Figueredo's story (February 18, 1818 - August 17,1870) goes much further than the creation of the national anthem.

Figueredo rose up in arms alongside patriot Carlos Manuel de Cespedes in October, 1868, when Ten Year War started, the first of the fights to liberate Cuba from foreign domain.

The digital website "Cubadebate" also remembers the independent, captured sick by Spanish troops in 1870 and conducted to the western Santiago de Cuba, where he was sentenced to death and executed by a firing squad.
