Sergio y Serguéi and Los Buenos Demonios are the two Cuban films competing this year for the coveted prize in this 39th edition of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.

The first one, by director Ernesto Daranas, known by films such as Dioses Rotos and Conducta, features a cast that includes Tomás Cao and Héctor Noas in the leading roles.

In addition to the merit of this film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), held in September of this year, it includes the special performance of American actor Ron Perlman.

The film is a coproduction of the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry (ICAIC), RTV Comercial and Mediapro, in collaboration with Wing and Prayer Pictures and Western Films.

The plot, written by Ernesto and Martha Daranas, shows Sergio, a radio amateur operator and teacher of Marxism, who does not know what to do to reorient his life, and Sergei, the last Soviet cosmonaut, who is almost forgotten in the damaged Mir orbital station.

Both men begin to communicate giving rise to a friendship that will help them face the changes that take place in their respective countries.

Los Buenos Demonios, on the other hand, is the most recent production by director Gerardo Chijona. According to him this is the debt he assumed with his friend and colleague Daniel Díaz Torres, who left the project unfinished because of his death in 2013.

It is the posthumous script of the director of Alicia en el pueblo de las maravillas, based on the novel by Alejandro Hernández, Algun Demonio, and with who he shared the writing of the script.

In the leading role played by this co-production between ICAIC and Wanda Visión, Carlos Enrique Almirante stands out, who plays the role of Tito, a young, honest and educated taxi driver who will later show an unexpected facet of his.

The cast includes Vladimir Cruz, Isabel Santos, Yailene Sierra, Alicia Echevarría, Ulises Aquino, Ángel Luis León and Enrique Molina. Los Buenos Demonios will be released to the public after its premiere at the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema.
