Despite the economic difficulties Cuba is facing, the pork production is on an upward trend and is expected to reach a record figure of 200,000 tons this year, an official source said today.

Norberto Espinosa, president of the Livestock Business Group at the Ministry of Agriculture, also said as an example at the TV news analysis hour Round Table, that all the annual and monthly plans were fulfilled in the last five years.

He recalled that in the 80's of the previous century, the island achieved its largest production, when it had 130 porcine state units, 26 liquid feed plants, 105,000 breeding females and abundant animal feed, an important volume coming from the sugar industry.

However, as the difficulties associated with the economic crisis of the 90s began to appear in the country, a decline in production began in 1993 with only 22,000 tons, due to difficulties in the availability of inputs, the decrease of the number of breeders and facilities, among others.

He emphasized how, in 1998, agreements emerged with cooperatives in the cooperative-peasant sector, and in 2005 they undertook, at the request of the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, a recovery program that allowed, at a short time, to double the production.
