The Development Director of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (Mintur), Alexander Sierra, said today that the Cuban tourism industry has boosted the island''s economy during the recent decades.

The official highlighted that in order to discuss the development of tourism in any space or tourist destination, the first thing to be taken into account is the territorial, urban and environmental planning.

He said that is no coincidence that the United Nations declared 2017 as International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

Hence, the World Tourism Organization keeps the projections and analysis of growth trends with a view to 2030.

In Cuba, this issue is addressed by taking into account the territorial policies linked to development programs in the short, medium and long term, Sierra said.

Alexander Sierra highlighted that tourism plays a key role in other sectors of the economy.

About the development programs of the tourism sector and the wide range of projects, Sierra explained that the work is approached by taking into account the product, brand and destination.

By 2030 is expected a growth in the number of hotel rooms (more than 100,000) mostly in Havana, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey and Holguin.

Meanwhile, the real estate development in the tourism sector will focus mainly in the construction and operation of golf courses.
