With more than seven billion cubic meters of water, the Cuban reservoirs today remain at 87.4 percent of their filling capacity, and 110 of the 242 are high, according to official sources.

As explained to the national television the infrastructure director of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, Yosmary Gil, the heavy rains associated with the subtropical storm Alberto left accumulated in the last 24 hours more than 100 millimeters in 128 kilometers of the information network, especially in the central and western regions of the island.

He also explained that the greatest overflows are reported in the central provinces of Sancti Spiritus, Villa Clara and Cienfuegos, and in Pinar del Rio and Isla de la Juventud, in the west of the country.

The highest accumulated rainfall is recorded in Taguasco municipality with 501 millimeters, according to Gil.

He added that after the decrease in rainfall, multidisciplinary groups examine the infrastructures to detect the effects and proceed with the recovery in those territories, once the weather conditions are normalized.

Thousands of people evacuated and significant material damage are reported in the center and west of the country, as a result of flooding caused by severe rainfall.
