Cuban film ''Esteban'' has opened the 18th Havana Cinema Festival in New York with a welcoming reception by the audience at an event in which more than 35 films will be shown.

The DGA New York Theater in Manhattan, with seating capacity of 436, was not enough to accommodate the public from diverse sectors and backgrounds that showed up for the opening night as there's growing interest to know about the cinema of the island and Latin America.

'It was great to see this welcoming reception, the interest of the people and the acceptance of the film,' director Jonal Cosculluela told Prensa Latina. His first work is one of 12 candidates for the Havana Star Prize, the main award the festival will grant.

The young director confessed that he came here with many expectations and doubts, as there's a different and demanding audience and the challenge for film-makers that this cosmopolitan city represents.

For the Cuban director it was good news that multi-awarded pianist and composer, Chucho Valdes, attended the opening day of the festival. Mr. Valdes composed the soundtrack of the film.

The director of the festival, Carole Rosenberg, was pleased with what happened at the opening ceremony of the event.
