Cuba will try to keep itself among an Olympic sport power in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, and has the challenge to improve the Cuban performance in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 2016, placing itself among the best 16 countries of the planet.

The Cuban Sports and Physical Education Institute (INDER) estimated the number of Cuban athletes under monitoring in the local Higher Peformance Athlete Training Schools, called Cerro Pelado and Giraldo Cordova Cardin in 1,500 athletes, to guarantee the results of Cuban sport in the 2020 Olympics, the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2018 and the Pan American Games in Lima (Peru) in 2019.

Cuban official Jose Antonio Miranda, now at the head of INDER High Performance Direction, told Cuban sport website JIT that among those athletes, 272 are strategic, and 29 are called to obtain those objectives in Tokyo in 2020.

To achieve these results a technical force of 263 sport trainers and an immediate reservation of 1,163 talents was created.

It was also confirmed that 21 are the sports and 368 the Cuban athletes classified for Barranquilla-2018, a regional event superior to precedent events in which the target of Cuba is to maintain the first place, exhibited from Panama 1970.

Cuba will have another demanding moment for the Cuban sport in Peru, where the intention is to reconquer the second position by nations lost in the past Pan-American Games of Toronto 2015.
