Cuba has shared its experiences in the Fifth Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, which concludes today in Cancun with the participation of statesmen, and representatives of international and national organizations.

Raul Ruben Acosta, head of the disaster reduction section of the island's Civil Defense General Staff, said Cuba's results on the issue are of international concern due to the mitigation of human and material damages achieved in the Caribbean island.

He told Prensa Latina that the Civil Defense System was an initiative of the Cuban Revolution, which is more than55 years old.

Responses to different hazards, particularly hurricanes, were enunciated during this period, he said.

Cuba explained its progress in issues such as early warning of hurricanes and quakes, and in the preparation of the population, including children and adolescents.

Also on the protection of people, animals, preservation of facilities and other procedures.

Our country and other islands are in the forefront of confronting climate change, he said.

The island states will lose territory due to the rise in sea level caused by global warming and for that reason, we have to be prepared, he said.

Prior to the meeting in Cancun, which is organized by the United Nations every two years, Cuba has implemented its annual disaster prevention exercise, which the island calls ‘Meteoro'.

Havana will host the tenth international congress on disasters in July 2018, where we will expose again our experiences and potential for cooperation, he concluded.
