Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos asserted here today that his country ''is very interested in investing in Cuba'', and urged Colombian businesspeople that accompany him on his current visit to identify opportunities and expand business on the island.

Santos presided over the opening session of a bilateral business forum at Havana's Hotel Nacional. Cuba's Vice President and Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Ricardo Cabrisa, delivered the welcoming key speech.

Executives from over 20 Colombian companies of the sectors of construction, packaging, food-processing, electricity, electronics, engineering and oil services, energy and chemical productions are attending the gathering.

'We have to strengthen our economic links on all fields, both in trade as in investment, therefore it is important that the entrepreneurial representatives from both countries get to know each other better', Santos stressed.

He said the two countries have good relations within the framework of the Latin American Integration Association, which allows reducing tariffs and expediting trade transactions, 'but the volume of operations is still small', he pointed out.

Santos mentioned tourism as an industry with great potential to establish complementary relations, and in this regard he called to create tourist packages that include offers in Cuba and Colombia, as there's 'a great opportunity to work jointly on this field'.

On his first day in Havana, the Colombian President paid tribute to National Hero Jose Marti and Colombian Nobel Prize in Literature (1982) Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He is also scheduled to meet his Cuban peer, Raul Castro.

Cuba and Colombia reestablished diplomatic relations definitively on October 28, 1993, after several breaking-off: in 1961, due to the isolation policy to the Cuban Revolution, and in 1981, under Alberto Lleras´s term.
