Camagüey Reports Huge Damage After Hurricane Irma

When recovery works are underway, local authorities in Camaguey have today reported that 1,600 homes in the north of the region of this central-eastern province have been ravaged after Hurricane Irma.

About 17,000 homes are currently damaged, 13,000 of them with no roof, and over 1,600 have been partially destroyed.

Jaronu Batey (settlement), considered as National Monument for its architectural values, located 80 kilometers north of the city of Camagüey, was one of the most-affected.

The coastal communities in Esmeralda, Nuevitas and Sierra de Cubitas municipalities have the largest number of evacuated people, totaling over 2,000 in the whole province, distributed in several facilities available by the provincial government.

Regarding agriculture, the most harmed outputs were banana and cassava plantations, as well as other set aside for tourism, including sugarcane plantations.

The Food-Processing and Fishing Industries are gradually recovering. In spite of the nearly 400 units affected, meat products are being elaborated to supply the whole population, while more than 100,000 liters of milk are being also processed. Meanwhile, 78 percent of the inhabitants of the 13 municipalities are being provided with bread, among other food products.
