Biotechnology topic opens International Science Workshop in Cuba

The lecture 'The functions of science in the Cuban economic and social model: intuitions from biotechnology,' opened today the XI Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation (CITAtenas-2019).

Agustin Lage, a leading figure in Cuban research and education, delivered the lecture to 160 delegates from Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica, Chile, Colombia, the United States and Cuba, with most of the attendees.

The researcher and professor highlighted, among other aspects, the role of the biotechnological field and the university in local development, as a connecting device between scientific centers, and the generalizations of the experiences of their studies.

He commented that Cuba's strategy has always conceived a high space for science and technology, and the union of both elements with the community, as part of the vision of the historical leader, Fidel Castro, that the country's future was one of men of science.

The opening of the Workshop in this western city included the presentations of the Matanzas Science and Technology Park Project and those of the Innovative Company of Architecture and Engineering Projects, and a tour of the Historical Center.

Also the presentation of the book 'La Odisea de la Ciencia' (The Science Odyssey), by Lage, advisor to the president of BioCubafarma, a company that produces medicines, equipment and high technology services to improve the health of the Cuban people, and generates exportable goods and services.

CITAtenas-2019, conceived for the exchange in these topics and social, interactive and systemic processes, has as responsible the delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in the western province of Matanzas.

Tomorrow, the XI Workshop will transfer its work sessions to the Plaza America International Convention Center of the Varadero Spa, the largest and most important on the island, located on the northern coast of Matanzas and 140 kilometers east of Havana.
