Because of the rapid action of workers and firefighters, none of the patients hospitalized at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology (INOR) suffered injuries during the fire which occurred on Tuesday , health officials said today.
The vitality of the work and the assistance are still maintained in the current conditions, to give continuity to the medical activity with all the high scientific level we are characterized by, Luis Curbelo, director of this health institution, told the press.
He explained that the fire affected the block where surgical patients were hospitalized, which led to the internal evacuation of 108 people in different areas of the institution, where they were out of danger. Not a scratch on any of them was to be regretted, he stressed.
In response to a question from Prensa Latina about the origin of this incident, he said that the competent authorities still study the causes in depth and professionally, but we still cannot make definitive evaluations, Curbelo added.
He pointed out that the protocol for events of this type were quickly implemented, with the primary objective of moving to different facilities to follow up on the care activities of those in hospital.
In this day 88 patients are treated in institutions near INOR such as the Manuel Fajardo Hospital and the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, as well as the Ameijeiras Institute, he explained.
It was also vital to minimize material damage to the building, clinical furniture and medical equipment, and to provide accurate and timely information to patients and families, he observed.
The doctor stressed that at this time several medical teams were disseminated throughout the different institutions to offer assistance and, above all, calm to patients and families.
Several hours after the event, the plan has been drawn up and it is already scheduled to continue the work of the outpatient chemotherapy rooms affected by the fire.
The cytostatic mixing chamber and the pharmacy were affected in certain ways, which means that these preparations are made in other areas of the entity and the patients scheduled for this day will receive treatment.
Curbelo also pointed out that from tomorrow the central surgical room, as well as the rooms for endoscopy, radiotherapy and imaging will continue to offer services.
According to a press release issued by the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, the fire, occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the biological tower of the INOR wastewater treatment plant, has been totally extinguished.
Immediately the first vice-president of the Councils of State and Ministers, Salvador Valdes Mesa, Health Minister Roberto Morales, the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province of Havana, Luis Antonio Torres, and the head of the Provincial Assembly of People's Power in this territory, Reinaldo Garcia Zapata, arrived there.
