49th Pacific Islands Forum Ends in Nauru

Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra ratified today the sense of honor for Cuba of participating in the 49th Pacific Small Island States Forum, which ended here today.
The meeting, which has been held in the Republic of Nauru since Monday, was an opportunity for Cuba the largest to strengthen the bonds of friendship and solidarity that bind it to those islands, with which it shares common challenges such as climate change and sustainable development, according to the Foreign Ministry.
Sierra, who led the Cuban delegation to the event, intervened in the Forum Leaders Session with Dialogue Partners, as well as in a Roundtable on the Goals of Sustainable Development, to which the nation was invited to present its experiences.
In these meetings, the Deputy Foreign Minister highlighted Cuba's commitment to continue strengthening cooperation in education and health with the region, as well as the exchange of experiences for the reduction of disasters caused by natural events.
Sierra also denounced the impact on his country as a result of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States for almost 60 years now.
He also carried out an extensive program of activities which included bilateral meetings with high dignitaries from the 14 islands members of the Forum.
During the meetings, he noted the good state of relations between these countries and Cuba and received expressions of gratitude for the cooperation in the health sector and the training of human resources for the Pacific region.
Significant among these appointments were those with the President and Foreign Minister of Nauru, Baron Davivesi Waqa; the Minister of Health, Charmaine Scotty, and other senior officials.
The Nauran leader praised his country's ties with Cuba, expressed his gratitude for the help in training its human resources in medicine and stressed the importance of having a Cuban medical brigade of 15 specialists.
As part of his collateral activities, Sierra shared with the Cuban professionals in a pleasant meeting.
After participating in the Pacific Islands Forum, Sierra will continue its tour of the region with a visit to Fiji on the 10th and 11th of this month.
In the final declaration of the event, the members of the forum defined climate change as their main threat and requested Washington to return to the Paris Agreement.
