The westernmost part of the Sierra Maestra mountainous range, the most important one of the country, is known as Desembarco del Granma National Park, covering approximately 25 thousand hectares.

On its shores, very near the town of Niquero, we find Las Coloradas beach, where the Granma yatch landed, coming from Mexico, with the purpose of starting the struggle in the mountains to the east of Cuba.

Being a region of different ecosystems, magnificent flora and fauna, beautiful beaches and settling sptot of picturesque rural communities, mainly of forest resources and coffee producers, it fosters the luxurious surroundings that waits for the vacationer by those sites. The landscape is distinguished by the abrupt cliffs, idyllic plains and small river waterfalls which start at the Sierra Maestra mountains and run into the sea. In addition, we find outstanding beaches such as Hicacos and Marea del Portillo.

There are two excellent hotels in Marea del Portillo, one of them named after the spot, and the other called Farallón del Caribe. From these, the person will have the chance of enjoying wonderful sceneries and heavenly beaches. They are comfortable, having the necessary services for a pleasant and unforgettable stay. Its environment, surrounded by beautiful coconut palm trees and memorable sunsets, make us daydream, especially if we contemplate them accompanied by a good photo camera and the most delicious cocktails made by mixing Havana Club rum and natural fruits.

From those hostels the tourists go on hiking by historical and natural pathways, exursions which include nautic sports and scuba diving, horseback ridings and contact with life and work of the inhabitants of nearby rural communities: simple mild-mannered, and very friendly people.

The sea terraces of Cabo Cruz and El Guafe natural pathway are some of the attracting spots of Desembarco del Granma natural park. From the aforementioned terraces it is said that they are the best ones kept in America. We are talking about a sort of stone steps, apparently carved by mythological giants of certain legends, being the result of the work of time and erosion, along with the coast road.

Some microclima rules in this area, being more dried and hot than the rest of the mountain range. Its rough tracks lead to dozens of interesting archaeological sites. El Guafe natural archaelogical pathway, a jewel for speleology fans, is part of this privileged setting, lying there one of the most important archaeological reserves of the country.

A tour of about two hours will take the tourist by pathways which pass through a dense forest, composed of a vegetation going from a semi-desiduous foliage to the bush. On one side, the fauna is composed of: tocororo (Cuba's national birdl), cartacuba, zunzún or hummingbird, jabado woodpecker, arriero or guacaica and the black bird; and, on the other, by the leaf litter lizard -a reptile relicted of night habits, being a zoo rarity at El Guafe, amid the typical flora of the area.

The nature tourism at the Desembarco del Granma Natural Park is just fascinating.
